Client
Private developer in Somerset.
Site
Former bus station in town centre.
Objectives
Compass was commissioned to manage regulatory liaison on behalf of the client when unexpected contamination was encountered during the construction phase of a retail site development.
Actions
Compass conducted a site investigation to determine the extent of asbestos contamination in soils and diesel contamination in perched groundwater.
Compass provided oversight of the targeted removal of asbestos containing materials and developed a practical and cost-effective remediation scheme to address groundwater contamination.
A hydrogeological assessment was also undertaken to establish risk of groundwater contamination migrating to a nearby watercourse.
Further, we were able to advise on protective measures to be incorporated into the construction design.
Our involvement negated the need for extensive soil removal and groundwater treatment saving over £200,000 for our client. Our strategy was accepted by the local authority planning officers and all planning conditions were fully discharged.
